Dr. Margaret Hamburg
Dr. Margaret Hamburg has been commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration since 2009, overseeing a budget of nearly $4 billion last year. Since taking office, Hamburg, 57, has launched initiatives related to agency transparency, public health innovations, food safety and tobacco use. More recently, the FDA has faced challenges that include dealing with a deadly outbreak of meningitis last year in the largely unregulated drug compounding industry, and oversight of a new generation of mobile healthcare applications.
