A Miami-area physician has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit $1.5 million in fraudulent Medicare home healthcare bills by falsely writing in beneficiaries' charts that the patients could not inject their own insulin at home.

According to a news release from the U.S. Justice Department, Dr. Jose Nunez, 63, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud by prescribing medically unnecessary services that were provided by two firms: ABC Home Health Care and Florida Home Health Care Providers, both in Miami.

Three other co-conspirators have already pleaded guilty in the scheme: Lisandra Alonso, Luisa Morciego and Vicente Guerra. According to the release, Nunez received bribes and kickbacks in exchange for claiming that patients had hand tremors, unsteady gait and poor vision, making them eligible for home healthcare services.
