HHS unveiled a health-professionals online training program geared toward improving the care of HIV patients as part of a broader announcement of prevention and care initiatives targeting HIV/AIDS.

Through the program, physicians, nurses and other providers can earn continuing medical education credit for completing online modules that address topics such as the basics of caring for HIV-infected patients, the benefits of starting HIV treatment early, barriers to HIV care and understanding how to bridge financial barriers to care. The modules are available through continuing medical education provider Medscape, according to HHS, which announced the program in Washington on Sunday as part of the opening of an international AIDS conference.

HHS also announced an effort to create a single application form for AIDS medications offered through patient-assistance programs; a text-message pilot program, called UCARE4LIFE, that will send patients medication reminders and tips on managing the disease; and a program to study how pharmacists can do more to help patients adhere to their medication regimens.

On July 19, HHS announced it would provide close to $80 million in grants to increase access to HIV/AIDS care.
