The American Academy of Family Physicians named Dr. Reid Blackwelder president-elect of the Leawood, Kan.-based organization, which represents more than 105,000 physicians and medical students.

Blackwelder is director of the medical student education division for the family-medicine department at East Tennessee State University's James H. Quillen College of Medicine, according to an AAFP news release. He also is a professor of family medicine. He has been an AAFP member since 1980 and in 2008 won the AAFP's Exemplary Teacher of the Year Award, according to the release.

Blackwelder was elected by the AAFP's Congress of Delegates at the group's annual meeting in Philadelphia this week. He will take over as AAFP president in 2013, succeeding Denver-based family physician Dr. Jeffrey Cain, who assumed his role as president this week. Dr. Glen Stream, immediate past president of the AAFP, is now the academy's board chair.
