The Mayo Medical School, Rochester, Minn., named Dr. Sherine Gabriel as its new dean. Gabriel replaces Dr. Terrence Cascino, who has served as interim dean in 2012.

Gabriel is a professor of epidemiology and rheumatology at the Mayo College of Medicine. Her past jobs at the Mayo Clinic include chairwoman of the health sciences research department and medical director of the Office for Strategic Alliances and Business Development, according to a Mayo news release.

The school said she is an educator, an investigator and a prolific author and the recipient of numerous awards. In her new role, she oversees undergraduate medical education activities at the Mayo Medical School campuses. The school has about 200 enrolled students and is one of five health schools operated by the health system.
