Physicians with Virtua, a four-hospital system based in Marlton, N.J., will be serving as medical directors for five retail clinics in New Jersey operated by MinuteClinic, the Woonsocket, R.I.-based division of CVS Caremark Corp.

The clinics are in CVS stores in Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties, and they will be staffed by nurse practitioners who will provide treatment for common illnesses and also offer wellness and preventive medicine services as well as “health condition monitoring,” according to a company news release.

The two parties are also integrating their electronic health-record systems, and—with patient permission—MinuteClinic will share medical histories and visit summaries with Virtua, according to the release.

MinuteClinic operates more than 610 facilities in 25 states and the District of Columbia, and it recently signed a similar agreement with the University of Texas Health Science Center's academic medical practice, UT Medicine San Antonio.
