Tenet Healthcare Corp. has received federal antitrust approval to acquire an independent physician association with more than 400 doctors based in Long Beach, Calif.—a deal that has not been publicly announced, and which the parties will not comment on.

Lakewood IPA is an independent medical group affiliated with two hospitals in the Lakewood, Calif. area—one of which is owned by Tenet, and one of which is not. Officials with Lakewood did not return multiple calls for comment this week after the FTC announced Monday that the deal would not violate antitrust laws.

A spokesman for Dallas-based Tenet declined to comment on the transaction, which has not yet closed.

Lakewood IPA is a multispecialty network of physicians managed by Coast Healthcare Management, which also manages seven other IPAs, according to its website.

Lakewood is affiliated with 157-bed Lakewood Regional Medical Center, which is owned by for-profit Tenet, and 420-bed Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, owned by five-hospital MemorialCare Health System, Long Beach.
