From the top down

By Cinda Becker  |  October 09, 2006

A hospital's board of directors appears to play far more than a symbolic role in both clinical and financial operations. The hands-on engagement of the board in the oversight of quality practices differentiates top-performing hospitals, according to a groundbreaking and ongoing study just released by the Governance Institute and Solucient. The study, based on a survey of 4,200 not-for-profit hospitals and health systems in the U.S., so far has found five statistically significant relationships between board practices and consistently high-performing hospitals. In the coming weeks, Solucient...

Hospitalists make a mark

By Barbara Kirchheimer  |  October 09, 2006

The term "hospitalist" was coined a mere decade ago even though the role began being filled in the early 1990s. In the years since, their numbers have exploded. Solucient's 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmark study is focused on broadly evaluating hospitalwide performance by calculating a composite score across a set of balanced organizational performance measures. By Jay Greene  |  February 27, 2006

Focusing on quality improvement, customer service and cost reduction, Scott Street, president and chief executive officer at Duncan (Okla.) Regional Hospital, says the 98-bed hospital achieved significant milestones the past three years in all targeted areas. "I tell management staff that if an agenda item doesn't relate to one of those three areas, then don't spend a lot of time on it," Street says. "We have tremendous cooperation from our medical staff to reduce waste as much as we can in the organization and our board is very supportive."Danbury (Conn.) Hospital has steadily increased...
