James Mongan is a bridesmaid no more. After the president and chief executive officer of Partners HealthCare System, Boston, finished second in 2005 and 2007, readers of Modern Healthcare and sister publication Modern Physician voted Mongan No. 1 for this year’s ranking of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives.

To compile the fourth annual ranking of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare, Modern Healthcare and sister publication Modern Physician announced the recognition program on Oct. 29, 2007, and Nov. 5, 2007, respectively. From Oct. 29 through Dec. 7, 2007, readers submitted nominations via Modern Physician Online at modernphysician.com. More than 7,300 nominations were received, compared with 1,700 for last year’s competition. The 100 physician-executives with the most nominations were placed on a final ballot.

Voting has ended for the 2008 Modern Healthcare/Modern Physician "50 Most Powerful Physician-Executives" competition. Nearly 20,000 ballots were cast this year, up more than 60% compared with the 2007 competition. More than 7,300 nominations were received, and the final ballot was based on those nominations. The final ranking will be published in the April 7 issue of Modern Physician and the April 14 issue of Modern Healthcare.
